At first the Romans let them get on with it, considering that they were a kind of unofficial ally. Then, unexpectedly, the Varahuns started attacking Roman settlements and seizing their women and property.
When Licius Varius discovered who was carrying out these attacks, he called for extra troops and he captured the Varahun chief, Canderutes. The Roman soldiers flogged him in front of his own people and then they crucified him.
Varius drew a line on the ground with his sword. “Everyone who is faithful to Rome, cross the line and swear fidelity to Rome! Traitors, stay where you are!” The whole tribe crossed the line, which seemed to satisfy Varius.
He led them to where Canderutes was nailed to the cross. “Take him down!” he ordered. The soldiers obeyed. They tied the naked leader to the patibulum or cross-piece, on his knees and with his arms stretched out. First one guard and then another fucked him in the ass while his people watched. “Put him back on the cross and castrate him!” ordered Varius.
Horror descended on the countryside. But still the Romans had no news of the whereabouts of the She-devil leader Vaniria. Her rebel group stayed in its remote hideaway, waging its own guerrilla war, striking the Romans hard at their weakest points.
Fear gripped everyone. Small groups of Roman soldiers sat sleepless in their remote fortifications, listening to the wind howling at night and waiting to be attacked. Rumors spread quickly. A soldier claimed to have seen a She-devil standing naked near the doorway of the guard-house. Another said he had heard in the village that the She-devils were spirits of the night and could appear unexpectedly, adopting any form they wished. Some villagers, he said, had seen a female goat roaming near the village. The goat had looked at them in a strange way, they said, and seemed to be asking them to follow her. Others had heard tales of a beautiful woman who rode alone, her heavy breasts bouncing slowly in the declining sunlight. It was said that men working in the fields stopped their work to gaze at her, and were so overcome by sadness and longing that they were unfit for work some weeks afterwards…
